Thank you to my Humana Teammates

I sent this to my Humana teammates this week ahead of my last day and wanted to share it with all of you to show my gratitude.

I am humbled by all the heartfelt notes and well-wishes you’ve shared regarding my transition from Humana . Your words and thoughtfulness mean more to me than you know. They also make this week bittersweet, seeing as tomorrow is the last business day I’ll be leading this remarkable company and team before handing things over to the very capable Jim Rechtin and the management team. It has been an honor and privilege to serve you and the company.

It’s impossible to write this note without reflecting on all I’ve learned from you, which has made me a better person. You have constantly reinforced that serving others is at the heart of creating a meaningful life. Over the years, your dedication to serving everyone who depends on Humana’s success—patients, members, communities, government agencies, shareholders, and fellow teammates—has moved me time and again. Watching your grace in action has been humbling and inspiring, something I’ll always be grateful for and will remember forever.

Another invaluable lesson I’ve learned from you is the power of perseverance. Our journey together was far from easy and included bumps in the road and times of uncertainty. Nevertheless, your steady hand, optimistic outlook, and unwavering commitment to doing the right thing provided a beacon of hope.

Your resilience has not only strengthened Humana but has been a lesson in the true meaning of determination and courage for anyone watching.

You’ve also shown that true success isn’t about individual accomplishments but about the triumphs of the team. The rare culture of teamwork here has been awe-inspiring, as I’ve seen how embracing diversity of thought and allowing everyone to be their authentic selves has created a powerful, impactful team. This lesson is a gift I’ll carry with me always.

While it was Humana’s business model and the impact we could make that brought me here in 2011, it was the Humana team that kept me here for so long. You brought color to my work life and made it worthwhile. We are better today because of you, and I’m undoubtedly a better leader because of you.

So, while I’m saying “goodbye” to my role at Humana, I’ll hold off on saying goodbye to you in the hopes our paths will cross again. As I’ve shared before, I plan to stay active in the healthcare industry and will continue my pursuit of finding ways to help others in various capacities.

For now, please accept my gratitude and thanks for welcoming my family—Janine, Clay, Carly, Chip, and Moose—into your lives and for allowing me to be part of yours. Most importantly, thank you for being more than teammates … you’ve been mentors, role models, and friends. Your contributions, friendship, guidance, laughter, and encouragement have meant the world to me. For all of this, I’m forever grateful.
