The Importance of Community

The Humana team has given a lot of consideration to how our move to virtual during the pandemic is impacting our communities –and younger generations, in particular. Our young people are determined, hopeful, and resilient, but we also need to leverage our resources to support them.

In Humana’s hometown of Louisville where we have 12,000 local employees, the majority of our facilities have been empty as more than 90% of our team continues to work remotely. Jefferson County Public School district (the largest school district in Kentucky serving more than 100,000 students) needed help supporting families with remote learning.

Together, we organized virtual instruction; special education assessments; school choice assistance; translation and technology help; health screenings; and social support from the city’s Office of Resilience and Community Services, all while tapping Humana’s facilities as the home base for this support.

Our main objective is assisting students and their families so they can continue to learn at a critical time in their development. The comprehensive services are a life preserver for families working through the pandemic’s challenges day-to-day. For example, we heard from a mom who’s very active in her children’s education. She shared how having access to a computer is something she can’t afford, but through this program and the resources available to her, she’s able to stay engaged and play an active role in her children’s education.

Businesses can make a great impact in their communities, especially when we develop solutions in partnership with the community. And by providing integrated services in a mix of virtual and in-person, informed by people’s circumstances, we can create meaningful and lasting change.
